The aussie-doodle is just that kind of dog!
The Aussie-doodle, or Aussiepoo, is a cross between and Australian Shepherd and a poodle.
The Australian Shepherd is a beautiful, intelligent animal similar to a Border Collie. They were originally developed to herd. Aussies make fantastic pets, though, because they are gentle with young people, extremely people-oriented and usually LOVE to please.
Our Kate, who is an Aussie-Border cross, is just exactly the perfect specimen of her breeding. She is a happy, gentle dog who loves to please. Originally we brought her to our farm thinking she would work with our red angus- and she does, sometimes! She is smart enough to do anything we tell her to. But we quickly realized that she doesn’t love it as Border Collies do- she loves US! She likes mostly to be with us, right by our sides, and when she does herd, it’s only because she just ADORES the praises she gets afterwards!
She is glad to be active, and also glad to be chill with us in the living room. She is polite and gentle, and will sit very patiently waiting for any little bit of affection that will come her way! This is very typical of an Aussie.
We knew there had to be more dogs like her in the world- she is just the kind of dog that everyone would want. In 2017, we bred her to Border Collie, and had a nice litter of 5 Aussie-Border pups that happily went out to live in homes in Rochester, Buffalo, and around the Finger Lakes. We are happy to hear back from them that they’re growing into sweet, friendly dogs that make their families happy every day.
But last year, as we thought about having a litter of summer pups, we were talking with our friends at Adirondack Labradoodles. They have been crossing poodles with labs for years, and they told us some of the awesome things that happen when you cross a poodle with your breed!
An aussiedoodle, or aussie-poo can take many of the great qualities that people love in Aussies and add to them some of the excellent hair-and-coat qualities that poodles offer! We end up with pups that look Aussie- only a fluffier, curlier version, that is hopefully less shedding and hypoallergenic!
We took the plunge, and the 2018 litter brought us seven sweeties that were bundles of fun!
Each of the dogs was very unique, and most looked a lot like their mother! But we also super loved to see the tuxedo twins and those fabulous chocolates!
We loved the fun we had with all those sweeties, and in 2019, we tried again for one more pairing of the same breed. This time, we were so happy to get a batch of milk and dark chocolates! Ha! They are solid brown and solid black, and we loved them so much.
And besides their looks and coat qualities, because Aussies and poodles are among the smartest breeds, these puppies learn so fast. By the time they are a few months old, they will already know most of the phrases that you use with them, like “time for bed,” “go for a ride,” and even “come” and “sit,” without much trying on your part at all! Like I said, an Aussie usually loves to please and a little positive reinforcement goes a long, long way.
We are also using Puppy Culture protocols with them, which is an amazing program for developing socially well-mannered and happy dogs that work well with people and other dogs. The extra training and exercises we do with them every day means that these pups will are already encountering lots of experiences that makes them not fearful or nervous, not anxious or likely to lash out in fear at new situations!
This year we are expecting two litters! We are breeded Katie, and our other dog Becky, there the same breed. This year we thought we’d do something different. We are breeding to a red moyan, so hopefully we’ll have some fun colors! We will keep you updated,as they are born and grow. These puppies will be ready to go around christmas!
Our puppies are loved and nurtured in our home and on our farm for the first 8 weeks of their life, and we are so excited thinking about the happy homes they will bless all over New York and Pennsylvania. Their blend of beauty, grace, intelligence, and affection creates what we think is the perfect animal, and we hope they bless the families that get them.
